Writing
When I was maybe eight years old, a friend of my parents asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I said, “A poet.” I have no idea where I got that notion—mine wasn’t a particularly literary family—but clearly I was drawn early on to the power of words.
I didn’t grow up to be a poet (though I did win one poetry prize in college). My primary medium is narrative nonfiction; projects include a book-length memoir about sailing across the Atlantic and Mediterranean, a shorter ebook about my mom, and a work in progress about making peace with a complex family past. I’ve also published numerous articles—mostly in sailing magazines—written instructional manuals for a community sailing program, and recorded with NPR’s Snap Judgment.
